Anacostia Main Street Initiative (Ward 8)

Situated on the hills of Southeast Washington, Anacostia overlooks downtown DC and offers panoramic views of the District and Virginia.  Once home to shipbuilders at the Navy Yard, Anacostia has now become a middle-class haven for families wanting proximity to downtown and the river in a park-like setting.

Convenient to downtown, housing developers have discovered the area and currently there are several hundred units of housing under construction.  Located in the Historic Anacostia area is the Frederick Douglass home as well as Ft. Stanton Park, one of the largest urban parks in the District.  A variety of housing options, retail opportunities and access to the riverfront make Anacostia one of the District’s rapidly rising neighborhoods.

Commercial District Boundaries
1100 to 1500 block of Good Hope Road, SE, and the 1800-2200 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave., SE. The proposed district includes the “Big Chair”, a widely recognized focal point of the business district of Anacostia/Far Southeast. Download the Anacostia Main Street Commercial District Map*.
